Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a common diabetic eye disease and can eventually lead to blindness. Diabetes affects the blood vessels of our body, the back of the eye are full of blood vessels. Swelling and leaking fluid of the blood vessels can be observed in the dilated retinal examination.
In the early and mid-stage of the disease, there could be no obvious symptoms, so it is advised by the Department of Health (DH), Patients should have an initial dilated and proper eye examination shortly after the diagnosis of diabetes. The examination should check for visual acuity, lens opacity and retinopathy. Regular eye exam are important, especially for those who are with diabetes over 10 years and the level of blood sugar is not well controlled.
